This chapter examines the relation of Maya glyphs or scripts to Ch'olti'an language. It suggests that the language of Mayan hieroglyphic inscriptions can be placed in the Ch'olti'an branch of the Ch'olan Mayan language family, and at a stage following Pre-Classic Ch'olti' but preceding Colonial Ch'olti'. It explains the method used to determine the proper linguistic affiliation of the Maya hieroglyphic texts, which includes meticulous analysis of the history of the evolution of both forms and functions of several Mayan languages.
