Abstract – Following the ‘visual turn ’ in many areas of communication, investigators are increasingly considering explicitly both the presentation of information in forms such as photographs, diagrams, graphics, icons and so on, and interrogating their relationships with linguistically presented information. The majority of analyses currently proposed, however, remain impressionistic and difficult to verify. In this paper, we argue that the study of multimodal meaning-making needs to be placed on a more solid empirical basis in order to move on to detailed theory construction. We describe the state of the art in corpus preparation and show how this can be expanded to be of value for supporting investigative work in the area of multimodality. 1.
