The performing arts comprise an array of creative endeavours, in which artistic expression is conveyed through time, across a range of modalities and media, but which directly involves the performer herself or himself , within the artistic act, in some way (as opposed to creating an artefact, possibly to be subsequently shared, or displayed, with or without the artist physically present). Historically, the performing arts have played important social roles across human civilisations. They have served as a means of conveying beauty, perpetuating cultural myths and narratives, sanctioning moral values, containing and mastering psychological challenges within ritual spaces, provoking thought, and inspiring the imagination. While, in a popular sense, performance is typically understood as an act of a performer sharing artistic material with an audience , the constructs of ‘performer’ and ‘audience’ can actually be expanded to far broader domains of the overall human experience — most notably, to those domains encompassing the myriad dimensions of human health. This chapter will endeavour to explicate an understanding of the performing arts — specifically, the modalities of music, dance and drama — as relational, aesthetic, temporal ways of being , constituting practices of and pertaining to health .
