I wish the reader to know something up front that I think is vital for an appreciation of my involvement in this project: I had never conceived of voice as anything but a human phenomenological problem. And although two-thirds of the essays making up this collection focus on human-based agencies, the volume enjoys the company of three elegantly written meditations on what I am calling a “spirit-voice.” When I was approached to pen an epilogue for the work, I admit that I was concerned that I would have to encounter a notion of voice that did not comport with my own and I would, thus, need to confront my own understanding of the happening of voice—an event that I had thought of as occurring through the human-human relation. I imagined this encounter to be a fearsome problem, but it turns out to be a problem of the very best kind. In this final turn in the volume, I will first relocate voice to the site of my latest obsession—zombies. By doing so I hope to begin a reconceptualization of voice that might be possible in the human-zombie relation; this revision allows me to start the confrontation that I allude to above. Second, the human-zombie relation implicates primal issues discussed in this volume—food crises and the deterioration of the planet. Finally, I want to suggest how the timely essays gathered here provide interpretive tools and interventionist practices necessary for forestalling a zombie apocalypse looming on the horizon due to rapacious eating of each other and our shared Earth.
