An examination of the sociological foundations of crisis communication requires a thorough description of the far-reaching and fundamental relationship between communication and crisis. Communication is not only a medium for simply coping with crises. Rather, the communicative foundations of the social world come into question during a crisis. Following this line of thought, this chapter outlines a sociological conception of crisis which, when combined with select theories of communication, aims to contribute a genuine sociological approach to crisis communication: an approach which conceptualizes crisis communication as the communication in a crisis of the communicative foundations of society.
