The ordo canonicus is characterised by far-reaching diversity in the ways the canons led their lives and in the origins of the canonical communities. To no small extent, this diversity has made historical research into the canonical order more difficult. This article sketches a number of important lines in the history of the origin and reform of the numerous canonical communities in the county of Flanders. Furthermore, it deals with three themes which are central to the history of the ordo canonicus in Flanders, i.e. the importance of relics, the relationship between the ordo canonicus and the ordo monasticus, and the role of the ecclesiastical and secular authorities in its foundation and reform.
