The independence of the Republic of Kosovo was unilaterally declared on February 17, 2008. The reconstruction of Kosovo in its political, socio-economic, and military components was undertaken by the first UN integrated mission comprising, besides the UN, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the European Union (EU), NATO and myriads of international and local NGOs. The author analyzes the condition of the newly independent Kosovo by exploiting the visual space as empirical basis. On Independence Day, two posters were put up behind the NEWBORN obelisk featuring the inscription New Life is born, New Hope is born, obviously taking the metaphor of the independent Kosovar state as a Newborn child even further. In Kosovo, a multi-ethnic vision competes with nationalist narratives created and enforced since the late 1980s. Keywords: European Union (EU); Newborn; reinventing Kosovo; Socialism images; young Europeans
