The preverbal order of mood, tense, and aspect morphemes motivates a universal hierarchy Mood over Tense over Aspect. Postverbally, the dominant order is the reverse of that, a fact that recalls the Mirror Principle and the order of demonstratives, numerals, and adjectives with respect to the noun. In the DP, the postnominal order is not exclusively Adj Num Dem, but admits of a limited set of permutations according to a restrictive theory of morpheme ordering. In this chapter, it is argued that the analogous limited set of permutations of Aspect, Tense, and Mood are observed postverbally, suggesting that the same restrictive theory can be applied in the verbal domain. Apparent violations of Mood over Tense over Aspect order preverbally result from the movement of Tense and Aspect particles to the left of a second-position speech act particle.
