subvocal speech during reading has long been of considerable interest to educators concerned with the teaching of reading. The problem is particularly vexing to those instructors attempting to improve the reading speed of the average student who has mastered basic skills but in spite of apparent high ability is unable to read faster than 150 to 200 words per minute. Perhaps the most outstanding characteristic of subvocal speech is its inaccessibility to diagnosis and research. Most problems in reading can be diagnosed by observing overt behavioral characteristics or by administering diagnostic reading tests. By contrast, the presence of subvocal speech, though often suspected to be the basis of many slow reading problems, is difficult to detect. Systematic studies of the relationship of subvocal speech to reading rate still remain to be done.
