This introductory chapter presents an overview of concepts covered in this book on a survey of key perspectives and discussions that have emerged since the advent of digital art more than fifty years ago. Digital art is predominantly understood as digital-born, computable art that is created, stored, and distributed via digital technologies and uses the features of these technologies as a medium. The book is divided into four parts: histories of digital art; aesthetics of digital art; network cultures; and digital art and the institution. Each part addresses specific topographical characteristics and challenges of the territory of digital art. The texts in the book give insight into the histories, aesthetics, politics, and social context of digital art as well as its relationship to institutions and its historicization, which is enabled by presentation, collection and preservation.
