Abstract This chapter seeks to extend Okin's powerful account of how the interaction of gender relations in the family with gendered norms of workplaces reinforces women's vulnerability. While Okin's own argument focused on the situation of women in the United States, this chapter argues that the basic structural logic of the gendered cycle of vulnerability also describes relations that condition and constrain the lives of many women in at least some less developed countries.
