In this chapter Tom Cochrane interviews three eminent composers working in three quite different spheres of musical production; Jean-Claude Risset (a pioneering electro-acoustic composer), Brian Ferneyhough, (one of the leading contemporary composers working within the classical tradition) and Carter Burwell (a highly distinguished film composer famous for his work on the Coen Brothers’ films, amongst many others). In these interviews each composer reflects on his motivations in producing music and the extent to which he conceptualises the expressive qualities of music, its uses, and abuses. Providing examples from their own works, these composers provide a fascinating insight into the ways in which the different mediums they work within have an influence over the characteristics of their works.
