Music in Florence during the decades around 1600 has assumed for us, as for Europeans of that time, an importance out of proportion to the city’s size, wealth and power. The population of Florence during the period in question remained at about 60,000 (59,216 in 1562; 63,143 in 1630) until the plague of 1630–33 reduced it by about 10,000, after which it rose to about 70,000 (70,352 in 1674). These figures show that it was only the sixth largest city in Italy, after Milan, Venice, Rome, Naples and Palermo. And it was far smaller in extent than any of these, enclosed as it was within walls little more than five miles in circumference.
