An industrial revolution is creeping stealthily across the land. It is creeping into traditional offices, where the gentle tapping of word processors has replaced the clatter of manual typewriters and the hum of electric typewriters. It is creeping into car assembly lines, where the whirr and clatter of machinery is being muffled and the shouts of men to each other across the shop floor are replaced by the muted tones of supervisors and technicians, inspecting and monitoring arcades of complicated equipment. It is revolutionising the smaller industries, where business computers relieve employers not just of the hard work of forecasting production flows and targets, but of the two or three people doing the book-keeping.
