Although two journals, the Irish Social Worker, and the more recently established Irish Journal of Social Work Research address professional social work issues in Ireland, much of the public debate on child abuse has occurred in the national news papers, on Irish television, and in books written by 'survivors' of child abuse.1 In this critical commentary, I will consider recent public debates before moving on to discuss two academic articles on child protection by Trish Walsh (1999) and by Caroline Skehill, Eoin O'Sullivan and Helen Buckley (1999) and an article published recently in this journal by Fred Powell (1998) which raises broader questions about the nature of social work in Ireland.
