Abstract This chapter draws upon the descriptions of Barbados written by visitors and early settlers. They had reservations about the challenges in adapting to the tropical setting. Removing the dense tropical forest, developing a cash crop, finding a sufficient number of servile workers, adjusting to a new diet, and dealing with a host of insects all posed huge problems. Yet, they marveled at the lush plant life on the island and at its pleasant climate. To most early commentators, Barbados was an exotic place with great opportunities for success for those with access to adequate capital.
