Abstract Among the places that Pausanias visits, and for which his Periegesis is meant as a guide for potential visitors, probably a majority are religious centers. Among visitors to religious centers. some at least deserve to be called pilgrims. Debate has raged recently over whether or not Pausanias is writing for an audience of potential pilgrims. and whether or not he himself deserves to be called a pilgrim. This chapter reconsiders these questions and supports the view that the intended audience of the Periegesis included pilgrims, situating it within the history of pilgrimage and the Greek world, and in particular within the “pilgrimage culture” of the Antoni.ne Age.
