The notion of 'form' in its indeterminacy-meaning the visible phenomenon and the invisible structure, the image and the idea, opposing itself both to content and to materiality-seems to many too vague a tool to be useful in aesthetic and art-theoretical discourse. Identifying style with form, that is, the how or the way something is done or made, as opposed to the what, does indeed sound a common-sense dualism. Viewed not from a theoretical point of view, but rather within the frame of the history of methodologies of art history and theory, the couple 'how/what' synthesizes the opposition 'formalism/iconology', which was frequently presented as sharp alternative during twentieth-century critical debate. Schapiro defines style in terms of constant form and constant elements; constancy constitutes a delicate question which is embedded in the nature of art history as a story of art.
