Abstract William B. Gudykunst created the Anxiety Uncertainty Management (AUM) theory consisting of two subtheories: a subtheory of effective communication, and a corresponding subtheory of strangers’ intercultural adjustment. The first subtheory was meant to elucidate the processes subserving effective communication. The second subtheory was meant to explain intercultural adjustment processes. Both subtheories were designed to improve the quality of their communication in intercultural communication contexts. This entry overviews the history, assumptions, theoretical categories, axioms, and applications of both subtheories.
