The practical application of art therapy is somewhat hampered in a medical setting, due to environmental elements. The medical environment is designed for treatment and is, therefore, laden with challenges for the art therapist. This chapter delineates a number of challenges along with strategies for integrating them into a successful art therapy approach. The difference between multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity should be kept in mind by the art therapist working with other caregivers in a medical setting. When the art therapist's goals and interventions are interfaced with those of others and related to the patient's ability to adjust, true interdisciplinarity is achieved. Artistic engagement is a beneficial self-care activity that allows one to remain effective. Art therapists working in such complex and energetic environments must be introspective and self-nurturing.
