Abstract This chapter critiques both criminal justice and restorative justice models for addressing violence against women. While advocates for criminal justice and restorative justice models have sharp disagreements with each other; they all tend to uncritically rely on the state-based approaches for addressing violence. Such approaches fail to address the role of the state itself in instigating and perpetuating violence against women, particularly poor women and women of color. In contrast to such state-based approaches, this chapter offers non-state based grassroots organizing models as an alternative strategy for addressing the root causes of gender violence.
