When an open-ended framework for metropolitan growth and change was adopted for Canberra, that growth corridors began to be considered for other Australian cities. This chapter traces the fundamental changes-organisational, conceptual and administrative-brought about by the pressures of growth and higher living standards. Events in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth illustrate perceptions of the corridor city and the changing nature of metropolitan planning in Australia. By the early 1960s, it was evident that post-war metropolitan plans for Sydney and Melbourne had not only underestimated their rates of growth, but that some of the ways in which the cities had been expected to absorb the added population were proving almost totally ineffective. Senior planners in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, taking on board the scheme for Canberra's growth recently endorsed by their colleagues, commended the concept to their political masters.
