Abstract This chapter pulls together some of the material from earlier chapters to provide a clearer understanding of the connection between individual psychosocial risk factors and our sensitivity both to the immediate social environment and to the broader social structure of modern societies. Although still conjectural, the picture which emerges makes a deeper sense than the parts alone. It begins to suggest a coherent reality behind the statistics from which we can draw many useful inferences about how to improve both the quality and length of people's lives in different contexts.
