Reoccurring Challenges and Emerging Threats

Abstract

Messages concerning natural disasters and pandemics would meet the public's need for control. However, this becomes more difficult as national borders become more permeable, international travel increases, and the available information from various technologies can be more rapidly diffused. Moreover, while these new challenges emerge, existing challenges are still present and continue to cause challenges for researchers and practitioners. This chapter examines the research surrounding those challenges in the scope of natural disasters and pandemics. Specifically examining information seeking, media use, and effects; both technological and personal challenges to effective communication in such contexts are explored.
