The findings of this study of illegitimate and adopted children at the age of 11 come from data gathered for the National Child Development Study (NCDS). This is a follow-up study of approximately 16000 children born in the week 3–9 March 1958 and living in England, Wales and Scotland. Originally information was collected on these children as part of the Perinatal Mortality Survey (Butler and Bonham, 1963). The children have now been followed up at the ages of 7 (see Davie et al ., 1972), 11 (see Wedge, 1969) and 16 (see Fogelman, 1976), and it is hoped to continue to study them as adults.
