This chapter examines the history of the museums and art galleries of the University of Oxford during the period from 1914 to 1970. During this period, the university's patronage of contemporary artists has been neither large nor receptive and the university has been conservative in its choice of portrait painters. Nothing much has changed about the university museums' facilities. However, from the 1970s to the present, the curatorial staff can no longer arrange their collections to suit the intellectual interests of themselves and their students because they are more concerned about attracting sponsorship and outside funding vital for their survival.
