Abstract This chapter describes the intonation and prosodic phrasing patterns which characterize the main dialects of the Catalan language, namely Central Catalan, Northwestern Catalan, Valencian, Balearic Catalan, Northern Catalan, and Algherese Catalan taking into account the most recent work on Catalan intonation. The chapter incorporates the important perspective of using a transparent ToBI analysis that is common to the intonation transcription of other Romance languages. The empirical basis of the investigation includes a large-scale intonation survey based on the Discourse Completion Task methodology in 70 different Catalan locales within these various dialectal areas. The central part of the chapter compares the prosodic realization of the different sentence types under analysis. Interestingly, differences in the prosodic realization of information-seeking yes-no questions (rising vs. falling configurations) distinguish two broad dialectal areas of the Catalan language domain which are also related to other Romance areas.
