Computer systems are now widely used in psychotherapeutic practice to assist in assessment, diagnostic interviewing, consumer health education and practice management (see Bloom, 1992 and Burnett, 1989 for reviews). However, their most complex and controversial role is as psychotherapist, where the computer delivers a portion or the entirety of treatment. Until recently, computer-assisted therapy programs have rarely progressed beyond the prototype phase in which the software is tested in a small research study but never made available for widespread use. In this chapter we review the development of computerized psychotherapy from the pioneering work of the 1960s to current innovations that could significantly enhance the delivery of psychotherapy. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
