This article focuses on a text traditionally thought to have been issued by Charlemagne in the year 800, which set out the labour services required from dependants on royal and church land in the pagus of Le Mans in western Francia. As well as providing a revised construal of the text’s literal meaning on certain points, the chapter engages with recent debates over the capitulary’s authorship and authenticity, and proposes an alternative suggestion. However, it also argues that a more fruitful approach to grasp the text’s significance might be to locate it in the trajectory of developing traditions about kings’ relation to manorial authority.
