Abstract

In this paper we develop the theory for irregular symmetrical and asymmetrical factor:i.al fractions. To aid in the developnent of the theoryl a 7-.-fuilction has been introduced. Using thisl it has been shown how to compute the matrix (MI say) to be inverttld for soh-ing the normal equations. Although in this paper we mainly ' discuss analysis of fractions, the theory developed here paves the ".'lay for the construction of good fractions by throwing light directly on the nature of M and hence on the variance-covariance matrix. This research was supportefl by the Mathematics Division of the Air-Force Office 'of Scientific Research.
