In this article, Ulrike Poppe describes the various documents she found in the “personal files” kept on her by the Stasi during the GDR era. Each type of document corresponds to a certain type of information known or sought by the secret police. These sources reveal the strategies pursued by the Stasi, the extent of its surveillance and the problems it ran up against in trying to control the population. U. Poppe’s contribution brings out how these police services operated, their language and their ideology, as well as certain institutions and persons that they mobilised on a day-to-day basis, as well as the social mechanisms underlying that mobilisation.
