Communication systems are a prerequisite for maintaining the complex social lives that primates lead, and are vital components of the learning and sharing of ecological information about the location of food resources or predators that affect survival. Human language, with its ability to refer to abstract concepts, is the most complex communication system known among primates, and probably reflects the highly developed cognitive abilities that are associated with our disproportionately large neocortexes (see Box 2.1). But, even though other primates lack language, they all employ some form of communication system.
