Abstract

The challenge in geography is to educate for the present, and for the future. This means to facilitate the learning of knowledge that can provide building blocks for future knowledge as well as to educate for metacognitive thinking skills. Both are necessary. Metacognition is often not systematically developed in the curriculum. If students are going to be lifelong learners, metacognition is a critical element which must be incorporated into geography learning.
