This paper explores themes of loss and emptiness which have emerged in the artwork produced by residents of the Jewish Home for Aged in Worcester, Massachusetts. Through five brief case studies and a review of theories about aging and about the grieving process, psychological, thematic and stylistic aspects of the art therapy experience in a nursing home are described. Examples of artwork by residents with a variety of disorders commonly seen in the institutionalized elderly (stroke, arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease) are included.
