Defining Knowledge and the Knowledge-Based Economy

Abstract

This introductory chapter provides a conceptual framework for the knowledge-based economy (KBE), including the various definitions of KBE by different international institutions and previous studies of the literature. Discussing the evolution from classical production functions towards the knowledge-based economy, the evolution of innovation and its manifold descriptions are explained. The chapter concludes by bridging the framework of KBE and innovation with the national innovation systems. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
