Abstract The paper provides a full discussion of the place of Asinius Pollio in Virgil’s early work and of the connection between the poet and Maecenas. Virgil’s early work is set within the context of Triumviral Italy and of the political turmoil of the period. Much use is made, often in a heavily critical way, of the evidence provided by the late antique commentators of Virgil. The main contention of this study is that the development of Virgil’s political allegiances may be traced by a close reading of the work that he produced between the late forties and the early thirties of the first century bc.
