Summary Starting from terminological, systematical and historical background information, this article discusses five case studies which all refer to different aspects of current song research: Die Gedanken sind frei, Der Mond ist aufgegangen, Hänschen klein, Am Brunnen vor dem Tore, Lili Marleen. The methodological side mainly addresses impulses of song-biographical research, historical-critical song research, musical biography-research, historical choir research and regional music research and reflects them critically. A reference to the singular effectiveness of the memory potential of songs is the conclusion to this article.
