Abstract

Based on a comprehensive study of the entire Swartkrans fossil assemblage, revised and updated faunal lists for Members 1-3 of Swartkrans are presented. Included in this revision are several taxa not previously recorded in the deposits. Member 1 has been dated by various techniques to approximately 1.6 million years (Ma), and based on faunal evidence from this study it seems likely that Members 2 and 3 are broadly contemporaneous. However, geological, geochronological and faunal evidence support the probability that reworking of Members 2 and 3 has occurred, indicating that until absolute dating of individual fossils within Members 2 and 3 can be completed, discussions of faunal correlations or first and last appearances of taxa at Swartkrans should be based exclusively on Member 1.
