Abstract

The periodization of Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, and the Progressive Era reflected the politics of their earliest historians. The period should be redefined as stretching from 1860 to 1920, and understood as a time of contestation, in which all Americans fought over the nature of the national government. Doing so will permit historians to create a new, inclusive, narrative of American history.
