Owing to the death of the author, this good translation of the 1936 German text does not contain a projected final chapter on developments concerning the causality problem during the last twenty years. Professor Margenau, who had agreed to collaborate in writing this last chapter, contributes an important Preface in which he shows that the depth of Cassirer's analysis was ahead of his time.
