The objective of this article is to review the main concepts of the variety of ecolinguistics known as “ecosystemic linguistics” by means of a discussion of “speech community” (SP) versus “language community”, illustrating with the case of the community of a farm located in Brazil’s hinterland. Besides the well-known concepts of “simple/complex” and “maximum/minimum” SP, “compact/diffuse” SP is also presented. Other ecosytemic-linguistic innovations are the “patterns of communicative interactrion”, and the classification of Brazilian Portuguese’s varieties as “rural dialects”, “urban dialects”, and “statal dialect”. Finally, the article mentions a possible “mental map” that every member of the SP must have in their minds in order to find their way in their territory.
