The paper deals with the problem of evaluating the performance of production systems in which Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques are applied. Even if the problems related with the design of quality control systems and with the analysis of the performance of manufacturing systems have already been extensively investigated, few works on the interactions between these two aspects have appeared so far. In the paper, production systems with manufacturing and inspection machines are considered. Production stages are separated by interoperational buffers of finite capacity. Machines are considered to be unreliable and they can fail in different modes. The behaviour of the machines can be monitored by control charts which are used to generate information about the state of the monitored machines. If a machine is observed to work in an out of control state it is stopped and activities to reset the machine to the in control state are performed. In the paper an approximate analytical method to estimate the performance of such systems is developed. Numerical results are reported to show the accuracy of the proposed method.
