Big Data may be characterized by their high volume, high velocity, and high variety. This chapter focuses on methodological challenges, in particular, on how official statistics may be produced from Big Data. It briefly describes the various types of data sources in official statistics and gives several examples of Big Data in official statistics in Netherlands. The chapter presents, as principles, the basic framework for assessing the use of Big Data in official statistics and discusses how this leads to a strong preference for using Big Data as auxiliary data. It provides several examples of integration of Big Data with other statistical sources. The chapter also describes how Big Data makes disclosure control of official statistics more difficult and indicates some ways how this may be researched further. It also presents a broader perspective showing how Big Data offers a chance for paradigm fusion in official statistics.
