The connectedness of globalization and English is particularly apparent in Asia. This chapter provides a brief overview of the notion of globalization and discusses how some of its core aspects are directly related to the spread, the roles, and the representations of English worldwide, with particular reference to the Asian region. It discusses the continuous linguistic “border-crossing”, one of the most conspicuous ways in which contextual language choices manifest themselves, which that takes place whenever two or more languages are shared by the participants in a communicative situation. English has also come to play a major international role as the preferred lingua franca. From this point of view, English can be considered “disembedded” from local and national sociocultural contexts and reconstructed as a vehicle for international communication. The point of contact between globalization and spread of English has perhaps most obviously been reached within the discourse of linguistic imperialism.
