Although Edvard Munch's The Scream is widely known, the story of his early years is less well known, and the work from his childhood and youth has rarely been examined. Edvard Munch left his life's work to the City of Oslo, including some 500 works done between the ages of 12 and 20. The contents in the collection of early work are reported in this paper, accompanied by an exploration of the insights the collection offers into Munch's artistic beginnings. A larger frame for considering this work is created by examining the manner in which art historians have dealt with Munch's early work as well as related studies in art education which deal specifically with early work of artists. Implications for art historians, art educators, and museum curators are discussed.
