Abstract

dissertation accommodated my research by missing work and giving up personal time.Interviewees invited me into their homes, found quiet spaces in their workplaces, and traveled throughout the Kansas City area to facilitate this project.Many, after being interviewed, helped recruit other interviewees.I am in debt to them for kindly sharing their time and their speech.Generally, in fact, most of my recruitment for this project was done by other people, and I am also grateful to the many Kansas Citians who were not interviewed for this research, but who helped facilitate contact with the friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, colleagues, and acquaintances.My dissertation was a dead end without those people.This work is also a product of my reliance on a community of teachers and researchers.No single person has done as much to contribute to my academic growth as my
