When Alcatraz Island first opened its doors to tourism in 1972 as part of the newly created Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in San Francisco, California, it became a key feature of one of the country’s first urban National Parks. Designated to provide a growing city population with opportunities to explore and experience recreation close to home (National Park Service 2015), the park overall spans more than 75,000 acres across three counties and provides opportunities for hiking, fishing, wildlife observations, boating, and many other forms of leisure. Over the past 44 years, it has become the most visited National Park in the country, with nearly 15 million visitors in 2010 alone (National Park Service 2016a).
