This book contains papers originally presented at a conference entitled Understanding Population Change: Issues and Consequences of Population Redistribution in the Midwest held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on March 12-14 1979. The focus is on the migration turnaround involving reduced metropolitan-bound migration and major increases in metropolitan-to-nonmetropolitan migration and on the impact and policy aspects of this trend in the midwestern region of the United States. The first four chapters cover the transition to zero population growth and the broad demographic geographic historical and policy aspects of recent population redistribution patterns. The remaining five chapters deal with specific issues that have emerged along with the population turnaround. Topics considered include motivations attitudes and socioeconomic changes among urban-rural migrants; industrys role in nonmetropolitan economic development and population change; conflicts in land use; the local political impact of the recent growth of small communities; and migration estimation and population projection problems.
