Hand stencils are a common feature in the rock art of the Arnhem Land Plateau (Chaloupka 1993). These can be the standard type with splayed fingers, specialised hand stencils such as the 3mf (three middle fingers held together; little finger and thumb splayed) or variant (such as bent-over fingers or stencils of hooked fingers; Walsh 1979; Gunn and Whear 2007). Other object stencils tend to be common items, such as boomerangs and spears, although a range of European objects make an appearance in the post-contact period (Chaloupka 1993: 232-3). The occasional stencilling of small animals and birds has also been identified (Lewis 1988: 205; Ta on et al. 2010).
