This chapter examines six southern ports - Ushuaia (Argentina), Punta Arenas (Chile), Stanley (Falkland Islands), Cape Town (South Africa), Hobart (Tasmania) and Christchurch (New Zealand) - that have become involved in the development of Antarctic tourism. It reviews the histories of the six ports, their separate responses to the challenges and opportunities presented by Antarctic tourism, and their current involvements in the industry. The ports through which tourists pass on their way to and from Antarctica, provide the services that keep the ships, aircraft and passengers moving for three to five months each year. Some ports benefit only marginally, others flourishing as a direct result of the new industry and in consequence making every effort to promote the source of their newfound prosperity.
